Oujda, a city of regulars worth keeping

Oujda has about 500,000 inhabitants (2024 census, according to Wikipedia) and is home to Mohammed First University, founded in 1978. Many café and snack customers are students, office workers and families who often go back to the same place near their home or faculty.

The centre, around Boulevard Mohammed V and Place du 16 Août, draws passers-by. The medina and the Bab Sidi Abdelouahab gate live from trade. Neighbourhoods such as Lazaret, the largest in the city according to Wikipedia, Hay Assalam and Hay Al Fath have local shops where staff know their customers. In all these places, a loyalty card is mainly about keeping regulars and bringing back those who drift away.

The digital loyalty card in Oujda, step by step

You choose the "buy N, get 1 free" rule and the reward. There is one reward per business, with no points and no tiers, so everyone understands it.

With a paper card, a stamp is easy to give to a friend. With Stampylo, a stamp is added only when the order is confirmed Ready. Every action is logged with the screen link that did it, and a daily check flags abnormal days. You can see if one screen gives too many stamps.

  • The customer pays, then scans the counter QR poster (A4, in French, Arabic and English) with the phone camera.
  • They get an order number for the day and see how many orders are ahead.
  • When the order is ready, the cashier screen taps "Ready": the customer's phone rings and the stamp is added.
  • For an order covering several people, the cashier sets the number of stamps for that order.
  • When the card is full, the reward is redeemed at the counter with a 6-digit code.

WhatsApp and Google Wallet, no app

The customer saves the card with a single WhatsApp message, or adds it to Google Wallet, where it updates itself. Apple Wallet is not available yet: on iPhone, customers keep the card on WhatsApp or in the browser.

When a customer stops coming, an automatic reminder goes out on WhatsApp. They can stop the messages at any time. You can also offer a birthday gift (only the day and month are asked). WhatsApp offers go only to customers who accepted marketing messages, at most one a week, bought as credit packs.

Hot summers, student holidays: plan for quiet weeks

Oujda has hot summers when the maximum can go above 40°C, with the chergui wind in August (Wikipedia). Habits often shift: more cold drinks in the evening, and students who go home for the holidays. The dashboard shows visits, stamps, rewards and returning customers, and a short summary email arrives every Monday, so you can see when to bring regulars back.

Worked example to adapt to your business

Example to replace with your own numbers: a coffee at 12 DH, with the rule "buy 9 coffees, the 10th is free". The reward costs one coffee in ten, about a 10% discount reserved for customers who come back. If your coffee costs 8 DH or 15 DH, or you prefer "buy 7, get 1 free", redo the maths with your prices.

Stampylo costs MAD 149 per month in Morocco, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed. You pay by bank transfer from the dashboard or with a prepaid activation code.
