Coffee shop loyalty ideas

A loyalty program for independent coffee shops: reward ideas without a chain app

Many "best coffee rewards" lists are about big chains. You don't have their app, their budget or their data team. This guide is about a loyalty program for independent coffee shops: simple reward structures, the review rules you must not break, and how to run it all on a digital stamp card. These are ideas to test in your own café, not promised results.

Why a loyalty program for independent coffee shops should stay simple

A regular should understand your program while waiting in line. If it takes a leaflet to explain, it's too complicated for a small café.

A punch card works because everyone already knows it: buy a set number of drinks, get one free. You pick the number and the reward. There are no points to convert and no tiers to explain.

Coffee punch card reward ideas you can start this week

These are common structures that independents use. Pick one, run it for a few months, and look at your own numbers before changing anything.

  • Buy 9, get the 10th free. The classic. Easy to explain and easy to count.
  • Buy 7, get 1 free. A shorter card for cafés where people come two or three times a week.
  • A free pastry instead of a free drink. It often costs you less and still feels generous.
  • Upgrade reward: a free size upgrade or oat/almond milk on the reward visit.
  • A small birthday gift, such as a free cookie or a free drink that week.
  • Bring-a-friend day: a sign at the counter offering a regular's friend a free cookie with their first drink.

Slow-hour ideas, and what a stamp card can and can't do

Many cafés are busy at 8 a.m. and quiet at 3 p.m. A slow-hour offer can move a few visits into those empty hours, for example a cheaper refill or a free extra shot after 2 p.m.

Be clear about the tool. Stampylo gives one stamp per real order marked Ready, with one reward per business, no points and no tiers. If you want a slow-hour deal, run it as a separate counter offer, or send it as a WhatsApp offer campaign (bought as credit packs) to customers who agreed to receive marketing messages, at most one offer message a week.

What to avoid: rewards for reviews

It's tempting to give a free coffee or a stamp to anyone who leaves a Google review. Don't do it.

Google's contribution policy says businesses may not offer incentives such as payment, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for posting a review. It also says merchants may not selectively ask only happy customers for reviews (often called review gating) or discourage negative reviews (Google Maps user-generated content policy, Fake engagement and Rating manipulation sections, support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114, checked on 2026-10-23).

In the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465, announced August 14, 2024, in effect since October 21, 2024, ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials) bans offering compensation or incentives conditioned on a review being positive or negative, and bans certain ways of suppressing negative reviews. Even an unconditional reward must be disclosed under the FTC Endorsement Guides, and Google bans it anyway.

In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (in force since April 6, 2025) bans fake reviews and reviews that hide that they were incentivized. The CMA can fine up to £300,000 or 10% of global annual turnover (annual revenue), whichever is higher (source: CMS, 'The DMCC Act: consumer elements come into force from 6 April 2025', cms.law, checked on 2026-10-23).

The safe rule: ask every customer the same way, and never tie a stamp, gift or discount to a review. Stampylo shows the Google review button first to every customer and never gives stamps, gifts or discounts for reviews.

How to run it on a digital stamp card

Stampylo is a web app. You and your customers don't install anything. It works in the browser on Android and iPhone.

You print a counter QR code. The customer pays, scans it with their phone camera and gets an order number. No buzzer or pager needed: when the order is ready, the cashier or kitchen taps "Ready" and the customer's phone rings. A stamp is added only when the order is marked Ready, so there are no stamps without a real order.

The customer saves the card with one WhatsApp message or adds it to Google Wallet. Rewards are redeemed at the counter with a 6-digit code. Every stamp and reward is logged with the screen that gave it, and a daily check flags unusual activity.

  • Choose N and the reward (for example buy 9, get 1 coffee).
  • Optional birthday gift: the customer gives only the day and month.
  • Automatic WhatsApp reminder to customers who stopped coming. They can stop messages any time.
  • A dashboard with visits, stamps, rewards and returning customers, plus a short summary email every Monday.

Honest limits before you start

We'd rather you know these now than find out at the counter.

  • On iPhone, the ticket page rings only while it stays open on screen. "Enable alert" keeps the screen on with a loud alarm.
  • Apple Wallet isn't supported yet; Google Wallet is.
  • Saving the card and comeback reminders use WhatsApp. Many US customers don't use it, so on Android, Google Wallet is the easier option.
  • No POS integration (Square, Toast and others). Stamps come from orders marked Ready in Stampylo, not from your till.
  • No SMS, no online ordering and no online card payment.
  • One reward per business. No points and no tiers.

Questions

What is the best loyalty program for a small café?

Usually the simplest one: a punch card with a short count, such as buy 9 get 1. Customers understand it in seconds. Test it in your own café before adding anything.

Can I give a free coffee for a Google review?

No. Google's policy bans incentives for reviews, and the FTC rule bans incentives conditioned on positive or negative reviews. Ask every customer the same way, with no reward.

Can Stampylo give double stamps during slow hours?

Stampylo gives one stamp per real order marked Ready, with one reward per business, no points and no tiers. Run slow-hour deals as a separate counter offer or a WhatsApp offer campaign to customers who opted in.

Do my customers need to download an app?

No. After paying, they scan the counter QR code with their phone camera, get their order number in the browser, and save the stamp card with one WhatsApp message or in Google Wallet.

Does it work with Apple Wallet or my POS?

Apple Wallet isn't supported yet; Google Wallet is. There's no POS integration, so stamps come from orders marked Ready in Stampylo.

How do I pay from the US, UK, Canada or Australia?

After the 14-day free trial, by international bank transfer in USD or EUR, or with a prepaid activation code. Help is on WhatsApp.
