How to attract more customers to a café in Morocco despite competition

In 2005, Aujourd'hui le Maroc wrote that cafés were springing up "like mushrooms" in Casablanca, which then had close to 12,000 cafés according to the paper (aujourdhui.ma, "Les cafetiers veulent le chaînage").

You cannot always move or redo the decor. But you can work on three things: being found, being well rated, and giving people a reason to come back. The rest of this page follows that order.

Step 1: create a complete Google Maps listing

Many customers search "café near me" on their phone. Without a Google Business Profile that you manage, your café may not show on the map, or it may show with wrong or incomplete details.

According to Google's own help page, Google picks the verification method and it cannot be changed. Review generally takes up to 5 business days (support.google.com, "Verify your business on Google", checked on 2026-10-23).

  • The café's real name, with no added keywords (Google Business Profile "Guidelines for representing your business on Google", support.google.com/business/answer/3038177, checked on 2026-10-23).
  • Exact opening hours, including Ramadan and public holidays.
  • Real photos: the front, the room, the terrace, your products.
  • The WhatsApp number you actually answer.
  • An update whenever something changes (prices, hours, closing).

Step 2: Google reviews, asked for honestly

Reviews matter when people choose on the map. But mind the rule: Google bans offering payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for a review (Google Maps content policy, "Rating Manipulation" section, checked on 2026-10-23). A café that trades a discount for a review is taking a risk.

Ask every customer, not only the ones who look happy, and offer nothing in return: Google forbids selectively asking for positive reviews. Reply to reviews too, good or bad, calmly. For example: "Thank you for your visit. Sorry about the wait on Saturday, we have added one more person at the counter." Or, if your customers write in Darija: «شكرا على الزيارة ديالك، سمح لينا على التأخير، غادي نديرو جهدنا باش ما يتعاودش.»

On our Google reviews page (/avis-google), a free generator makes a QR code of your own Google review link to print near the till.

Step 3: WhatsApp, without being a nuisance

In Morocco, WhatsApp is often the most direct line to your regulars. We advise sending offers only to customers who agreed to receive them, and not too often.

With Stampylo, the customer saves their card with one WhatsApp message. An automatic reminder goes to customers who stopped coming, and they can stop messages any time. Offer campaigns go only to customers who accepted marketing messages, at most one a week, paid for with credit packs.

Step 4: match nights without chaos at the counter

During the CAN, Hespress reported that cafés and restaurants in Casablanca upgraded their TVs and sound, prepared special menus and offers, and that some added staff to welcome the crowds (Hespress, "أرباب المقاهي والمطاعم ينخرطون في استقبال ضيوف الكان بالبيضاء", 20 December 2025).

On a match night the problem is often not bringing people in, but serving them without a crush. A few ideas:

  • A short match-night menu that is quicker to serve.
  • One more person at the counter at peak times.
  • Pay first, then get an order number: with Stampylo, the customer scans the counter QR and their phone rings when the order is ready (on iPhone, while the ticket page stays open).
  • Show "Preparing" and "Ready" numbers on a second TV (a Smart TV or Android TV browser), so you do not cut into the match on the big TV.

Step 5: a fair seating rule, announced in advance

In September 2025, Hespress told the story of a customer in Mohammedia who was asked, in front of others, to order a second drink or leave after about 45 minutes. He took the case to the president of the Mohammedia court of first instance (Hespress, 6 September 2025). A Mohammedia café owner quoted by Hespress said space is limited and costs (rent, electricity, wages) are fixed. A member of a consumer rights association said cafés that limit sitting time often do not announce it beforehand.

Sitting time is a real issue for your numbers. But a rule sprung by surprise can drive away a regular and their friends. If you have a rule, post it at the entrance and on the price list, and say it politely. This is not legal advice.

Step 6: bring them back with a loyalty stamp card

Winning a new customer takes effort. Bringing one back often takes less. A "buy N, get 1 free" stamp card is still the simplest way. To pick the reward, see our 10 loyalty ideas page (/idees-fidelisation): we do not repeat them here.

With Stampylo, the card is digital. A stamp is added only when the order is confirmed Ready, so no stamp without a real order. The card saves on WhatsApp and in Google Wallet. Apple Wallet is not available yet.

What Stampylo does not do

Stampylo does not create your Google listing, and it never writes or buys reviews. It does not connect to your till software, send SMS or take online orders. On iPhone, the ticket page rings only while it stays open on screen.

One plan: MAD 149 per month, MAD 399 for 3 months or MAD 1,490 per year, with a 14-day free trial and no card. In Morocco you pay by bank transfer from the dashboard or with a prepaid activation code.
